Yeah, I too feel the answer to 2 was not convincing. The artistes on stage continuously chat with each other not essentially on the concert that is on. I think you're entirely correct on the exclusivity part. The fans always seem to want to exhibit their knowledge of the art more than actually enjoy it during a concert. The "besh"'s and gestures they make seem more to indicate their knowledge rather than for their enjoyment itself, because most of them do not do the same things when they listen to music privately.
I feel a convincing answer to the language question is as follows: Irrespective of whether it is a Tamil song or otherwise, you never understand the verses of the krithi the first time you hear it. Even if you take film songs, the first thing that hits a fan is the music and not the lyrics. You (atleast I) get interested in the lyrics only in the subsequent hearings. That being the case, if you really want to learn the lyrics/know the meaning, the effort for understanding a telugu/sanskrit song will be only slightly more than for a tamil song.
About critics, I know they can really break a musicians career. But I'm not sure how constructive they can be.

Answer to (2) -- shows exactly why Carnatic music is elitist and localized. Carnatic musicians (even fans, sometimes) are in love with exclusivity that they can never see their beloved art get popular.

Answer to (4): Bad analogies for a reasonably acceptable point

Last line of answer to (5): I think he is talking about musicians who have already made their mark - not budding singers who are trying to enter the Madras Highbrow Carnatic Music bastion.
