The one major complaint I have against Pranab Mukherjee is that, being such a senior leader from Bengal, he has done nothing for his party there. Mamta Bannerjee has been the only one to put up some sort of a fight. I think that is why Pranab is very much liked by the communists and they would most likely back him for the PM post if their support is required to form a congress led govt (a very likely scenario). I think Pranab is a good at managing crisis situations such as the Mumbai attack, but I really doubt if he has a long term vision like MMS.

The way Pranab conducted himself post-26/11 makes me believe he'll make a better PM. MMS' main drawback is that he's an economist and not a politician. His focus is also pretty limited. Pranab has been in the politics long enough to think independently and break out of any internal party / coalition constraints. The thing that goes against MMS is the way he handled (or didn't handle) the terrorist situation. He looked like a loser after every attack.

Pranab Mukherjee to be the Prime Minister ? Why ? Pranab Mukherjee will be only as good as IK Gujral, maybe Vajpayee at best. I think Manmohan is the best bet, especially if he is free from communists.
